DALLAS OPERA announced today that it has named Ian Derrer as the company’s new general director and CEO.

Derrer, the general director of Kentucky Opera and a former artistic administrator at Dallas Opera from 2014-16, will officially begin his tenure with the company in July 2018. Derrer's appointment as Dallas Opera's eighth general director fills a void left by Keith Cerny, who abruptly resigned as Dallas’s general director in December after nearly eight years at the company’s helm. Cerny departed Dallas to assume the position of general director and CEO at Calgary Opera in January. Derrer’s appointment was announced this afternoon at the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House by Dallas Opera Chairman Holly Mayer.

“Ian is well loved and greatly respected by our board members, TDO staff, and the opera world. And, he returns to a place where he already has deep roots, along with a host of friends and admirers, “ said Mayer in a statement issued today by the company. “However, familiarity doesn’t outweigh managerial skills and experience. The reason Ian was selected to be the Dallas Opera’s next general director and CEO is because, by the end of the selection process, it was clear to myself and other members of the search committee that, among a very impressive field of contenders, Ian stood out.”

Derrer has a degree in voice performance from Southern Methodist University, and holds additional degrees in opera production and performing arts management from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) and Brooklyn College. He has worked professionally as a singer, assistant stage manager and director at companies that include Santa Fe Opera, Atlanta Opera, Opera Carolina, Opera Pacific, and Washington National Opera. In 2004, he became an administrator at New York City Opera, and, in 2006, he was appointed as a rehearsal administrator at Lyric Opera of Chicago, where he spent eight seasons and rose to become the director of production and head of the rehearsal department. In 2016, he became the fifth general director in Kentucky Opera’s history.

During his time at Dallas Opera, Derrer worked closely with Cerny and music director Emmanuel Villaume on casting, production and programming details; he oversaw budgets for the artistic staff, principal artists, orchestra and chorus; and served as the point of contact between TDO and national unions on issues related to collective bargaining.  He also functioned as a liaison between artistic administration and the other departments within the company.
