Ramón Vargas  is Gaston in Verdi’s rarely performed Jérusalem (Sept. 28), which opens this year’s Festival Verdi in a new production at Teatro Regio di Parma. Daniele Callegari conducts, and Hugo de Ana directs. After Parma, Vargas travels to Paris for the title role in La Clemenza di Tito (Opéra National de Paris, Palais Garnier), and to Geneva, where he sings Don Ottavio in Grand Théâtre de Genève’s Don Giovanni.

Shanghai Peking Opera’s Farewell My Concubine has its New York premiere at the Metropolitan Museum of Art this Sept. 15–24. Staged in the museum’s seventeenth-century-style Astor Chinese Garden Court, the production stars Chinese soprano Shi Yihong, frequently dubbed “the first lady of Chinese opera.” Chinese–American theater and film director Sherwood Hu directs the one-hour dramatic opera.

Contemporary Dutch composer Michel van der Aa presents his 3D chamber opera Blank Out at the Park Avenue Armory this September, in its North American premiere (Sept. 21–25 and 27). Combining inventive composition with interactive film and staging, van der Aa shines light on South African poet Ingrid Jonker, on whose life and work the opera is based. Soprano Miah Persson sings live and on pre-recorded film loops with baritone Roderick Williams, who appears only on film.

The Who’s Pete Townshend revisits ’60s Mod in live performances of the band’s rock opera, Classic Quadrophenia, presented September 9 and 10 at the Metropolitan Opera House. Singing alongside Townshend about popping pills and cruising the streets of London are Billy Idol, who appeared in The Who’s 1996 live version of Quadrophenia, and British tenor Alfie Boe; Robert Ziegler conducts.

Before heading to the Met in October to take over the title role of this fall’s Norma, soprano Marina Rebeka sings Luisa Miller in concert at Munich’s Prinzregententheater (Sept. 24). Conductor Ivan Repušić paces the Munich Radio Orchestra through the three-act Verdi opera, which also features Ivan Magrì as Rodolfo to Rebeka’s Luisa. spacer
