1. GERALD FINLEY has been appointed Officer of the Order of Canada, recognizing a lifetime of achievement and dedication to the nation. The Montreal native opens the season at CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY on October 3 with his role debut as Verdi's Falstaff.

2. MERYL STREEP is reportedly set to play Maria Callas in an HBO film of Terrence McNally's 1995 play Master Class. Filming will begin in early 2015.

3. MINNESOTA OPERA has commissioned Dinner at Eight, a new comic opera by William Bolcom and Mark Campbell based on the 1932 play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. The play's most notable adaptation to date was a 1933 MGM film starring Jean Harlow and Marie Dressler. The opera arrives in the 2016–17 season.

4. On June 21, countertenor DAVID DANIELS and conductor SCOTT WALTERS were married by RUTH BADER GINSBURG, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, in Washington, D.C. Daniels is at San Francisco Opera next month as Arsace in Handel's Partenope. In 2015, he sings Oscar Wilde in Opera Philadelphia's Oscar and makes his Vienna State Opera debut in Adès's Tempest.

5. OPERA SOUTHWEST,in Albuquerque, NM, will present the U.S. premiere of Franco Faccio's 1865 opera Amleto, an adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet, on October 26. Long thought lost, the autograph score of the opera was discovered in 2003 in the archives of Casa Ricordi, Milan, by ANTHONY BARRESE, now the artistic director and principal conductor of Opera Southwest. Barrese will pace tenor Alex Richardson in the title role of the Albuquerque premiere, as well as in two concert performances in early October with Baltimore Concert Opera. 

6. This month AVIE RECORDS will release a new fourteen-CD set of Wagner's Ring, recorded live at SEATTLE OPERA during the 2013 revival of Stephen Wadsworth's 2001 production. ASHER FISCH leads the Seattle Symphony and a cast of principals headed by Alwyn Mellor (Brünnhilde), Margaret Jane Wray (Sieglinde), Stephanie Blythe (Fricka), Greer Grimsley (Wotan), Stefan Vinke (Siegfried) and Stuart Skelton (Siegmund).

Lincoln Center's WHITE LIGHT FESTIVAL (Oct. 7–Nov. 11) will offer the U.S. premiere of Peter Sellars's staging of Bach's Saint Matthew Passion in a coproduction with the Park Avenue Armory. Other highlights of the festival include Curlew River with Ian Bostridge; William Kentridge's staging of Winterreise, with Matthias Goerne; and the N.Y. premiere of Basil Twist's Rite of Spring.
