Stage Director Paul Curran Named General Manager of Norwegian Opera

Paul Curran, the forty-two-year-old international stage director, has been named as the new general manager of Oslo's Den Norske Opera, the Norwegian company announced this week.

Curran, a native of Glasgow, reportedly signed a five-year contract with the company that will see him officially assuming the opera's helm on January 1, 2009. As part of his tenure, Curran will oversee the company's move into its sleek new home in the Snøhetta-designed New National Opera House in Bjørvika, a harbor in the eastern section of Oslo's waterfront. Per the arrangement, Curran will report to the new general director of Norwegian Opera, Tom Remlov, who also oversees the company's ballet corps and orchestra.

"Norway and Scotland has much in common, both nationally and culturally, and given my passion for opera and affection for Scandinavia, I couldn't have wished for a more exciting challenge, artistically as well as personally," Curran is quoted as saying. "I look forward to bringing the Norwegian Opera to a new level in the world's most beautiful opera house."

Originally trained as a dancer in London and Helsinki before going on to perform with Scottish Ballet, Curran began his theatrical studies at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney after an injury ended his dance career.

The director's numerous productions have included Tannhäuser at Teatro alla Scala; La Fenice's Daphne; Peter Grimes and La Bohème at Santa Fe Opera; Pittsburgh Opera's A Midsummer Night's Dream; Bohuslav Martinu's Mirandolina in Wexford; Tokyo Opera's Il Trovatore; the Canadian Opera Company's Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk; and the Kirov Opera's Tosca. In November Curran's new production of Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten will have its premiere at Lyric Opera of Chicago with Deborah Voigt in the role of the Empress and Christine Brewer as the Dyer's Wife.
