South African Soprano Marita Napier Dies After Long Battle with Cancer

SABC News is reporting that South African soprano Marita Napier has died in Cape Town, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Johannesburg, Napier was an established international singer who was best known for Wagner and Strauss roles. She was one of only three South African born singers to have performed lead roles at the Vienna State Opera, the Met, La Scala and Covent Garden.

Napier performed in nineteen productions of Wagner's Ring in houses around the world. She also won Grammy Award for the Metropolitan Opera's recording of Die Walküre.
