New York Radio Station WQXR Launches Weekly Operavore Show
New York classical radio station WQXR will launch a weekly radio-show edition of Operavore — its online all-opera webstream — which will begin airing on Saturday, January 19 and will air every week through May 25 at 12:30 p.m. ET on 105.9 FM in NYC and online at www.wqxr.org.
The new show, which will expand on Operavore's online offerings, will be hosted by WQXR's Naomi Lewin, and will feature legendary mezzo Marilyn Horne interviewing notable figures from outside the world of opera, including playwright Terrance McNally, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and actress Tyne Daly. The show will also feature news bulletins, previews of new recordings and interviews with industry notables. Weekly commentary will be provided by bloggers La Cieca and Fred Plotkin.
"We are thrilled to launch this new show as the perfect next step in WQXR's expanded opera coverage," said Graham Parker, WQXR's general manager. "Since launching Operavore last January, we have been plugged into the passionate, vibrant audience for 'everything opera.' The new show aims to appeal to both those who know a little and those who know a lot about opera using humor, music, engaging guests and up-to-the-minute news."
WQXR will launch the Operavore show as a limited-run series intended to accompany the station's weekly broadcasts of live and recorded full-length opera performances from companies around the U.S. that include the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera and Houston Grand Opera.
