Actor Patrick Stewart and Renée Fleming to Co-Host Lyric Opera of Chicago's Second City Guide to the Opera
Lyric Opera of Chicago has announced that actor Patrick Stewart will join Renée Fleming in cohosting the company's Second City Guide to the Opera, an opera-themed comedy-variety show featuring ensemble members of the Chicago-based improvisation and sketch comedy school alongside performers from the Lyric's Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center.
The event, which is scheduled to take place in the 3,500-seat Ardis Krainik Theatre of the Civic Opera House on Saturday, January 5, is a project of Lyric Unlimited, a new, multifaceted program of expanded community engagement and artistic initiatives that will involve Lyric's education programs.
Conceived of by Fleming as a way to convene the Second City comedy troupe and the Lyric Opera of Chicago — where she serves as a creative consultant — the revue-style show will feature ensemble members of world's premier comedy theater in opera-themed comedic sketches, a performace by Fleming and performances by mezzo J’nai Bridges and tenor Bernard Holcomb. Fleming and Stewart will share emcee duties and appear in satirical vignettes.
